You know you're getting old when...

...getting this is the highlight of the week!  Introducing my new Trudeau garlic press which got a great review by the folks at American Test Kitchen.  My new project this weekend is to mash up some garlic....

Put it into a plastic bag....

And stick it in the freezer!  Ta da - your very own stash of minced garlic that you can just use whenever you'd like.  Just break off a piece of the frozen garlic popsicle and toss into your dishes.

Ha, I can't believe I just wrote garlic popsicle.

On the Lin-sane Train...

Yeah, I'm jumpin' on that bandwagon! For the past few days I've been a really bad law firm attorney who is not billing like she's supposed to be.  Instead I'm being a good Asian American by reading Lin article after article - with something this great going on, there's tons of interesting and even uplifting and poignant perspectives to read (like herehere and here). Last night as we watched the highlight reel of the Knicks game, mc said that we should go watch Lin play when the Knicks come to Cleveland to play the Cavs - 4/20.  GENIUS. Although this would make a great surprise bday present (everybody knows 4/23 is my bday rah??) from mc, I was getting all nervous that good tix to this game would be sold out (as mc said "nel, every asian in Ohio is going to be there that night"), so I jumped the gun and bought 2 tickets. Heh. Heh. Sooooooooooooooo excited!!!!!

Speaking of excited.....

Day 12

Day 12...and still feeling good :D  Even though I cheated :D

My lunch today:
- brown rice (the trick is to soak overnight before cooking!)
- baked salmon cake (salmon, quinoa, sauteed kale/onion/garlic, capers)
- sauteed kale
- roasted asparagus
- kongnamul broth.

Ran out of TTM sauce :(

Day 7!

Today marks day 7 (of 21) of the clean program.

Nellie's lunch today: Turkey quinoa loaf and quinoa salad with TTM dressing. oh and the apple in the back.

So far, so good!  I'm now used to having a shake for breakfast and dinner and I actually kind of like them - lately I've been using frozen mango chunks.  And I love eating my lunches!! Seriously, they're super duper delicious.  I made a meatloaf using turkey and quinoa, sauteed baby criminis, onion and garlic, and some tamari and good balsamic.  Also have a quinoa (yeah we made a lot of quinoa this week) salad with sauteed spinach, peas, broccoli, garlic and onion with the TTM dressing.

Although I am an ardent lover of acronyms, I realize that some of my readers (all 5 of you girls) may not be.  TTM is a sauce I make with tamari sauce (the og version of soy sauce), tahini, miso, rice wine vinegar, one packet of stevia, a small glurg of sesami oil, a medium glug of EVOO.  While I can't say it's changed my life, it is helping make this cleanse worthwhile :D

Quarantined.

I was only sick for a day.  Ha ha!  In yo face, vitamins!  However, my wubby is still sick.  Usually I'm a pretty good nurse, but I didn't make him chicken noodle soup or anything.

Instead I made him:

play that card game where you have to guess the number that's on your forehead.  We played two rounds before he said this was stupid.  You really need to be drunk to play this game.  And fevers do not equal drunk.

Then we watched Troll Hunter and there were subtitles.  We're cultured like that.

And even though I watched this already, I made him watch Wet Hot American Summer just because I wanted to see it again.  I'm a good girlfriend.  Right, Paul?

Thanks, Paul.  I'll take care of you the next time you're sick.

Hoppin' on the G.Paltrow bandwagon...

So, day 2 of the cleanse. Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken super highly of Dr. Junger's Clean Program and after reading the book, I finally decided to make the commitment.  Here's an idea of what Yunni and I are up against. After I got all my stuff, I read all the ingredients and dosage, did some research and purchased similar powders and supplements for yunni. Masochism must be in So blood b/c we

Left to right: the goop version of the Clean Program (for me heh heh) and my generic equivalent rendition of the same (for my bro)

Went home for a night to my parent's house and woke up to snow! Here's a picture of our backyard. If you look closely to the far right, you will see Bawoo's dog house. And if you look even closer, you can see Bawoo. Ha, jk, he's all snuggled inside his little home. But did you squint hard to see if you could? haha.

Here's some oven roasted brussel sprouts.  I like to splash some really good balsamic vinegar all over after they've cooked.  Adds a really pretty glaze and fresh taste, rather than roasting them with the balsamic which is probably equally delish.

Sickness

I was just telling my family last weekend that I haven't been sick all winter and fall.  And I boasted to them that I wasn't taking any vitamins and that must be the trick.  Of course, I jinxed myself because now I'm sick.  Darn my chutzpah.

I wish I could be home right now and someone was petting me too sleep.  Doesn't that sound so nice?

Hurricane Yunni

As you know, Yunni has moved in with me for a few months while he finishes his last quarter of school.  It's interesting when you take a 30-year woman set in her ways/particularities/quirk and mix in a slobbish/hippy/lacksadaisical 22 year manchild.

View 1 of my living room / yunni's bedroom

View 2 of same. You get a bit of an idea of Hurricane Yunni.

One of the great things about Yunni being here is his general company.  For all his slobbish college ways, he certainly is a delightful, funny and good-natured companion and it's nice to have someone to come home to. He has it pretty good too.  He gets all the big sister amenities: free groceries and restaurant dinners, washer/dryer, occasional laundry service, cooked meals, clean towels, and not to mention some solid big sister lectures and guilt trips. (heh.) But really, I'm so grateful to be able to spend so much quality time with one of my favorite people.

So, this is our last day of doing the Elimination Diet, and tomorrow we move full on to the Cleanse portion of our detox.  Just to give you an idea of what I've been eating:

Brown Rice with sauteed Kale/Broccoli/Peas and my special Miso Tamari Tahini dressing

Nellie's Last Supper

This weekend was my last weekend to indulge on all sorts of good things before Yunni and I started to prepare our bodies for the Clean Program cleanse.  My friend Ann was housesitting for her sister and invited me over for a big veg fest.  We watched all sorts of trashy cable tv, drank Franzia box wine all day, and of course I made some delicious treats for us.

First some malay chicken curry and roti and chinese choy sum with oyster sauce.

For dessert a double layer double chocolate cake...

Here's Ann passed out. She would be pretty made if she knew I was posting this but I couldn't resist.

A

And here's me with my hair, only 3 inches shorter! I'm covering my jjeejjees - just trying to keep this blog from getting shut down for inappropriate image.  I'm trying to go for a more professional look these days, but I think this cut just makes me looking somewhat younger, don't you think?

Peen

Was looking at chinese horoscopes.  Came across this for the rooster:  "People born in the year of the rooster usually are good looking and like to show themselves off."  I'll be bookmarking this site.

Here's Captain when he was a wee thing.  So innocent looking, yea?

Now the only wee thing about him is his peen. Have you ever seen a kitty peen? You will scream.
It comes out whenever he licks himself. He's a cat, so that means on a daily basis. I am raising a pervert.

Hot Friday Night Date...

...with myself!  Ugh, ever since I moved back into my apartment, this clothes pile has gained a life of its own. I guess it's time to clean up!! When I came home my brother was napping on my bed.

So while I am cleaning up tonight, my brother is out with his buddies. When he left, I said...
"good bye brother from the same mother"
and he responded with...
"good bye sister from the same mister".

Gawwd he cracks me up.

Ice Cream Mouth Now

Me stabbing too-hard-ice cream with a fork because I don't want to go get a spoon and I need the ice cream in my mouth NOW.  Yes, I am on my leak.

(The slight smudge on the lower left is an imprint of my tongue trying to lick the damn thing.)

Nellie's New Kix

Unfortunately, I am celebrating this MLK day in the office.  But fortunately, I got some new fancy sneakers!! My favorite Christmas present this year :D

Oh, and here's another piece of good news...I saved 2,500,000 coins in Bakery Story and bought myself the biggest eyesore in pastry game history.  Gehnari Bakery presents the latest and greatest...chocolate fountain.  Looks a little phallic to me...of the uncircumsized variety.

Observed

Jimbo waking up this morning looking concerned, "I had a dream....."
Me, "Well, it is MLK day."

Kidding aside.  "I have a dream" is so immersed in our culture now that we swallow it as it is.  It's good to go back and actually read the whole speech.  Soak in the meaning of the words.  Also his letters from a Birmingham jail always makes me sit upright.  It is sad and remarkable that we can still apply his words to today.

Oui Oui Oui

Dinner last night - veal with white sauce on a white table in a very white decorated home with lovely  white people drinking white wine.  Stuff Jumi people likes.  Ha!  Just kidding.  We're not drinking white wine....

Dun dun dun.....

It's Friday the 13th and so far, so good.  Actually started off nice.  This morning saw a guy waving his arms slowly and staring at this really nice sun that was popping it's head over the trees.  The guy was chanting, "I love you" to the sun over and over again.  It was super kooky, but nice, ya know?  But I didn't stare at him too long in case I went blind.

I guess the only bad thing that happened was the other half of this blog sent me this.
She does so every Friday.  Says it's not officially Friday until I hear it.  Sad part is is I always click on it. Thinking maybe this Friday she's going to send me something different.  Sometimes I even scroll all the way through hoping this might be a spoof or there's a surprise ending.  One of these Fridays....

I should leave work early.  Jimbo put that nice thought in my head with this...

Nellie's first post....zzzzzz.......

Well hello, Nellie here. Here's me chilling in my hotel room eating dinner and watching Friends. Last week living at a hotel woohooooooo. Oh, I'm eating some crab chowder and salmon avocado roll from whole foods. And why yes, that is my own portable bottle of cho gochu jang.

Dinah started this

I'm at the Pizza Hut....What?
I'm at the Taco Bell....What?

Two ladies - one posting from New York, the other posting from Ohio....What?

It's like we're at a combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell....but on a blog and without the taco smell.

(Yes, this is how our minds work.  You can thank Dinah for inspiring us to put our thoughts down for virtual posterity)
